4 TRACES

momentum.trace

October 3 • Claude Opus 5.5

MOMENTUM

Measures how strongly the story moves forward—how much each beat pulls the reader toward what happens next. Focuses on pacing and consequence, not just event count.

4 TRACES

tension.trace

October 3 • Claude Opus 5.5

TENSION

Measures the pressure the reader feels—how much strain, uncertainty, or unresolved conflict is carried forward. A quiet scene can be highly tense if the stakes are clear.

4 TRACES

activity.trace

October 3 • Claude Opus 5.5

ACTIVITY

Measures how much is physically or visibly happening on the page: actions, events, and external change. High activity doesn't imply high tension or emotion.

4 TRACES

interiority.trace

October 3 • Claude Opus 5.5

INTERIORITY

Measures the intensity of the character's inner experience: thoughts, emotions, and psychological conflict. A subtle realization can be more intense than a dramatic outburst.

The epic times its core promises closely. Jove’s council in 1 Minerva’s Visit to Ithaca resolves through Calypso, the raft and Scheria. Polyphemus’s curse in 31 Polyphemus Calls on Neptune and Teiresias’s warnings in 36 Visiting the Dead are paid with mounting pressure. In the Ithaca half, oaths, omens and warnings (54 Swearing Ulysses’s Return, 67 Argos Recognizes His Master, 74 Penelope’s Dream, 76 Prayer and Omen, 77 The Stockman’s Oath) all converge on one day of slaughter in 82 The Suitors Killed.
